Film Review: Arthur Christmas, an unusual yet exciting adventure

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

With National Christmas Movie Marathon Day approaching on the 23rd of December, there is no better way to celebrate than curating a list of movies!

Arthur Christmas, directed by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook, toys on your traditional beliefs of Christmas.

This eccentric, yet compelling animation gives an unusual twist to ‘Santa Claus’ in a new digital age. Starring James McAvoy voicing Arthur, Santa Clauses clumsy yet loveable son, the film takes audiences on an adventure they will never forget of love, happiness, and laughter.

The plot revolves around Arthur, who works in the letters department at the North Pole, who sets himself out on a mission to deliver a misplaced present with his (now retired) ‘Grandsanta’ and his elf companion, Bryony Shelfley. The trio work the clock to deliver the present before Christmas morning, facing a few obstacles along the way.

The story is shows how many people rely on technology and how it can fail you. It shows that sometimes it is better to keep to old, trusted traditions. With James McAvoy’s performance as Arthur, he makes him silly yet loveable and shows what can happen when you believe in yourself – no matter the challenge at hand.

This movie is a heartwarming, hilarious adventure from start to finish, making Arthur Christmas a must-watch for anyone in need of a little pick-me-up this holiday season. The film shows how everyone should appreciate how lucky you are to have your family and friends around you, and how courage is the most valuable life skill. This movie is certainly different to your typical popular winter rom coms, but it will definitely make you smile.
