Get Festive with the BSU: Christmas Crafternoon Q&A

With the end of term approaching, the Brighton Students Union (BSU) are holding a variety of Christmas themed events to help students unwind and enjoy the last few weeks before Christmas. One of the events is the Christmas Crafternoon: You’re your Own Bauble event of Tuesday, the third of December. Louise, the Activities Co-ordinator, shares everything you need to know.

Q: When and where will the bauble decorating event take place?

A: It is on the Grand Parade Campus starting at 2pm, everyone who’s brought a ticket I’m going to send an email too, so that’s why we do recommend the tickets because you’ll get the email updates if anything changes.

Q: Do participants need to sign up in advance, or can they just show up on the day?

A: So, we do recommend booking it in advance because we book the room depending on how many spaces have been booked up.

On our student union website, you can go on the activities page and all the events we do are free, but you do sometimes have to pay a £2.50 deposit which you get back. So, it is completely free, but it is just sort of like a commitment, so people do turn if they book a ticket.

We tried to make them all free, so no one ever actually has to make an actual financial permanent commitment.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of baubles a student can decorate?

A: We want to book it closer to the time, so we knew how many people were coming. So, there’s no real limit but obviously we will have limited supplies, you can make as many as you want.

Q: What materials will be provided for decorating the baubles, and do participants need to bring anything?

A: They don’t have too, everything arts and craft will be there but if they do want to bring extra things they are more than welcome because we just bring like a few crafty bits to have a chilled session making things but if they have a particular interest in crafts, they can bring more stuff along.

Q: Is there a competition or judging aspect to the event, and are there prizes for the best-decorated baubles?

A: There’s not actually on this one, we have done competitive ones and competitions before.

This one is more just a chilled like getting to know people and have a fun time. But in the future, that is definitely something that we could do for sure. We could either get our officers to judge it or students.

For now, we’ve just done it in a way that we want people to just take them home to their houses and almost have it as the decoration they can be proud of and display it on their Christmas trees or something.

Q: Is there any more information which you can share about the event, or any upcoming events students could look forward too?

A: For this one, our Grand Parade activities get smaller numbers to up, so we are trying to push for that this year and to get more interaction. So, it’s quite a small turnout for this one and there’s still tickets available.

On Wednesday we also have a ‘Make your own Gingerbread house’ which will be in Falmer which we are trying to kind of do different ones in all campuses because we’ve done quite a few at Moulsecoomb already.

The fun thing’s with these activities is that there is usually a small number of people so it’s quite fun because you can actually get to know people and have a chat rather than it being big and overwhelming.
